During his four years at Barnstable High School, there were relatively few student-athletes who came to represent poise, selflessness, ability and a sense of team spirit and leadership that was the essence of Paul Thomas. Well-liked and respected by his teammates and classmates and coaches, Thomas went from being an All-Cape & Islands tackle in his junior season on Leo Shields’ undefeated 9-0 championship juggernaut, to the top fullback on Cape Cod in his senior campaign on the gridiron. He was no slouch in the scoring department in 1951, either, scoring 10 touchdowns and 9 PATs for a total of 69 points. All totalled, Shields’ football squads of 1951 and 1952 won an incredible 16 straight games with the help of Thomas’s leadership. He was no slouch on the hardwood for coach Fred Maki’s “five,” either, helping lead the Red Raider cagers to an Eastern Mass title his junior year. In baseball, Thomas was a key component in Charlie Howes’ Cape Cod diamond dynasty as the Red Raiders captured four consecutive league championship titles with the aid of Thomas on the mound and at the plate.
