The 1896 Season From The Barnstable Patriot, Monday Evening, November 9, 1896 "The Falmouth foot ball team is to meet the Barnstable High School team on the Watts field, Camp Street, on Saturday next, when a very interesting game is expected. Play will commence at 2 o'clock. If the weather is pleasant there will be a crowd to witness the game. Will Cook of the High school foot ball team met with a serious accident on Saturday last while playing a practice game on the Watts field, when one of his ears was nearly torn off. Dr. Pick was called and rendered necessary surgical aid." From The Barnstable Patriot, Monday Evening, November 16, 1896 Football Game. "An interesting football game was played on the Watts field, Camp Street, on Saturday afternoon between the Falmouth team and the Barnstable High School team, which resulted in a victory for Falmouth by a score of 16 to 4. The visitors had a strong centre formation and an excellent system of interference , which latter point the home team had not been able to perfect itself in, as the whole team had never practiced together. Our boys played well for a first game and we trust in the games to follow they will retrieve their honors. The game was played in gentlemanly and courteous spirit, and if the spectators would give less of their interference the boys would play just as well. There was a large number present to witness the game. On Thanksgiving day a game will be played here between the Tabor Academy team of Marion and our High school team. Game is called at 2 o'clock." From The Barnstable Patriot, Monday Evening, November 23, 1896 "The High school football team were disappointed in not completing arrangements with the Tabor Academy team for the Thanksgiving day game. A game has been planned however in which the contestants with the School boys will be the "Sports" of Hyannis. It promises to be an exciting game, and will be on of skill vs. "beef." A number of the married men will probably demonstrate to their friends that they can kick football as wel l as they can play base ball." From The Barnstable Patriot, Monday Evening, November 30, 1896 "The Barnstable High School football team played a game with the Falmouth High School team on Saturday and were again defeated. Score 28 to 0." |
