The 1901 Season

The following excerpts were published in the of The Hyannis Patriot weekly newspaper.

November 18, 1901 Monday evening edition

"In the football contest between the Hyannis and Yarmouth teams, the home team won by a score of 12-0. There was a large crowd of spectators."

November 25, 1901 Monday evening edition

"On Thanksgiving Day there is to be a game of foot-ball (sic) on the Watts field, Camp Street at 3 p.m. between the Hyannis and Yarmouth teams. This promises to be the most interesting contest of the season and there will probably be a large crowd of spectators from this and neighbouring villages."

December 2, 1901 Monday evening edition

"A very interesting and exciting game of football was played on the Watts field on Thanksgiving afternoon, with a large crowd in attendance. Although the Hyannis boys were victorious, as they always are at this game, it was by no means a walkover as the Yarmouth team proved a sturdy opponent. At one time, by continual centre (sic) plunges, the Yarmouths carried the ball close to their opponent's goal, but their chance of scoring was lost by an unfortunate fumble, allowing 'Coleman' to grab the leather and make some yards for Hyannis; after which Peter P. Chase made a sensational run and landed the ball so near the Yarmouth goal that it was readily taken over on the next play. The final score was Hyannis 22; Yarmouth 0. The best playing for Hyannis was done by Sears, Bassett and that star of the Hyannis football firmament, Peter P. Chase. For Yarmouth, Sears, Phillips, Ellis and Morgan did great work."
