Historical Notes

The 1909 Season, From the pages of The Hyannis Patriot

Oct. 4, 1909 — Fred Scudder was elected captain of the B.H.S. football team and Harrison Kent was elected manager. B.H.S. will play Tabor Academy at home at the Hyannis Athletic Association Field.

Oct. 16, 1909 —
The Tabor Academy team defeated the BHS boys 12-5 in a football game on the Hyannis Athletic Association Field on Saturday. Next Saturday, the visitors will be the Lawrence High School team.

Nov. 1, 1909 — Ralph Stevens was among the high school boys who went to Vineyard Haven Saturday for a game of foot ball with the V.H.S. (Vineyard Haven High School). The trip was made by boat from Osterville.

Nov. 15, 1909 — The BHS football team was trimmed by the Tabors at Fairhaven on Saturday to the tune of 35-0. An account of the game at Falmouth Saturday week (sic) will be found on our 2d page.

Nov. 15, 1909 — In the most exciting game of the season on the Lawrence High School Field, the Lawrence High School team defeated Barnstable High School Saturday afternoon, the 6th (November) by the score of 10-5. Warren, the star half back on the Falmouth team scored a touchdown in the first half, but missed the goal (extra point).

In the second half, Barnstable High School tied the score, and it became doubtful if another touchdown could be made with only four minutes to play. By playing quickly however, the Falmouth boys succeeded in landing the pigskin over the goal line, making the score 10-5. Warren gailed (sic) to kick the goal. The teams were fairly well matched although the Barnstable boys were the heavier. It was the cleanest as well as the most interesting game seen on home grounds this season.

Other notes from the Nov. 6, 1909 game versus Falmouth...

"Scudder and Bassett were the star players on the Barnstable High School team. The game was witnessed by a large crowd of spectators as there was a loud demonstration when Warren scored the second touchdown. This is the second time the Lawrence High School team has defeated Barnstable High School this year.
