William P. "Billy" Bangs is deemed one of the greatest coaches and innovators to ever set foot on Red Raider soil.

    Arriving in Hyannis in 1926 as Barnstable High School's first-ever Athletic Director -- known then as the Physical Director -- Bangs proceeded to launch a storied career not only on the Red Raider gridiron -- amassing 8 championship titles in just 11 seasons -- but in launching the school's spring track & field program, its golf program, tennis program and an entire slate of girls interscholastic athletics. He brought aboard with him Katherine "Kay" Nehubian -- a fellow BHS Athletic Hall of Famer -- who coached girls field hockey, basketball and softball for 42 years.

    Bangs holds the second highest winning percentage of any Red Raider football coach to this day -- .670 -- for his phenomenal mentorship and inability to accept anything less than the best from his boys.

     He also served as the school's first-ever paid varsity baseball coach.

   His track teams won four consecutive Cape Cod Interscholastic Invitiational Meet Championship titles and numerous of his prodigees went on to play collegiate athletics. In essence, Bangs created the varsity track & field scene on Cape Cod.

    While Bangs hung up his coach's whistle after the 1936 school year, he served as athletic director until 1943 and the advent of World War II.
