Sports Scribbles — Cartoons & Caricatures by Brooks Kelly

Brooks Kelly graduated from Barnstable High School in 1953 and played on the offensive line

on the vaunted, undefeated team of 1951 (9-0). Artistically gifted, Kelly's cartoons and

caricatures of Barnstable High School and othr Cape Cod athletes were published from time to time

in the Cape Cod edition of the New Bedford Standard Times. Mr. Kelly now lives in Pembroke.

BHS Head Coach W. Leo Shields is depicted getting his boys ready for the big

Barnstable-Falmouth Thanksgiving Day Game in 1951, a game which BHS

won, 40-0, to complete a 9-0, undefeated campaign.

BHS Red Raider starting center Fran Fermino is depicted here

as a force to be reckoned with. He was, and holds the all-time

record at BHS for varsity football letters earned with 5, having

started since the eighth grade. Fermino may very well be the

best offensive lineman to ever don the Red & White.

Some of the best players on the 1951 team included Jack Aylmer, Don "Ducky" Nickula,

the late Ray Hostetter, Paul Thomas and Harry Maddox.

Howie Bearse was a top athlete and football star at BHS in 1950.

Coach Leo Shields is depicted trying to figure out what to do about replacing

some of his best players lost to graduation while his team readied for the 1952 campaign.
