Melchiono graduated from Malden Catholic High School in 1950. In 1960, he graduated from Merrimack College where heplayed four years of varsity ice hockey. He then went on to receive his Master's Degree from Boston College in 1966.

He was an assistant ice hockey coach at Merrimack College from 1960-63 and 1968-72. In between those two tenures, Melchiono established the boys ice hockey program and served as head coach at Chelmsford High School.

Following his tenure at Chelmsford High, Melchiono went on to become the head boys ice hockey coach at Barnstable High School and remains to this day, arguably, its greatest coach since the program's inception in 1959. At BHS, Melchiono coached for 22 consecutive seasons from 1973 through 1995, capturing eight league championship titles and two state championship titles.

In addition to being inducted into the BHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000, Melchiono is also enshrined in the Merrimack College Hall of Fame and the Massachusetts High School Hockey Coaches Hall of Fame.

His win-loss record at BHS (minus three of his 22 seasons and part of two seasons) was 275-131-28 (.677).
