The moment that Liz Curley’s feet stepped onto the vaunted parquet of Barnstable High School, it seemed readily apparent that greatness was in the making.

Earning varsity letters for head coach Tom Turco in each of her four seasons, she was a four-time OCL all-star and Cape Cod Times All-Cape & Islands player, but even more to her credit was a three-time all-state player, helped lead BHS her sophomore year to an unforgettable 28-0 State Championship season and was five times named either a Boston Globe or Boston Herald All-Scholastic. To round out her remarkable career, she garnered the prestigious Gatorade Massachusetts Player of the Year award her senior campaign, an award won by just five Red Raider volleyball girls since the program’s inception in 1982. She finished her career with 990 kills, 2nd best all time at BHS.

There was little doubt Liz’s freshman year that she was an athlete to be reckoned with, respected and even revered by her peers. In her one season of varsity basketball – her freshman year – Curley was leading scorer in the first game of the season with 17 points and she earned Old Colony League all-star honors before opting to focus on just one sport: volleyball.

When the dust finally settled on her Red Raider career, Curley had accomplished much – even when compared to her fellow netters in Red & White. All totaled, Barnstable went a phenomenal 98-7 from 1999 to 2002, averaging 24.5 wins per season and capturing four straight Division I South Sectional Championships. Her senior year, Curley averaged an outstanding 12.6 kills per game, tallying 315 to go along with 50 blocks en route to an athletic scholarship at Hofstra University.
At Hofstra, Curley again made an immediate impact, earning 2003 Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year honors and eventually becoming the first at Hofstra to win AVCAAll-American honors in 2006. She was inducted into the BHS Athletic Hall of Fame, Nov. 24, 2012
