Bylaws, Constitution & Eligibility Requirements

Preamble

We, the undersigned, wishing to secure for ourselves the pleasures and benefits of the association of persons commonly interested in the Barnstable High School Athletic Hall of Fame, constitute ourselves the BHS Athletic Hall of Fame Committee and enact this Constitution as our governing law. It shall be our purpose to further exchange of information and cooperation between members, to institute a shrine or similar honorary device to honor the highest caliber of student-athletes, fraternalism, and individual operating efficiency, and to so conduct Hall of Fame programs and activities as to advance the general interest and welfare of athletics in the community.

Purpose

The purpose of the Barnstable High School Athletic Hall of Fame is to give lasting recognition to those individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the achievements and prestige of Barnstable High School in the field of athletics and who have continued to demonstrate in their lives the values imparted by interscholastic athletics.

Furthermore, it is the purpose of the Hall of Fame to promote more interest in the Barnstable High School athletic program among alumni and to display before students in attendance at the High school, the performance of past athletes who have contributed so much in making Barnstable High School the esteemed and vital institution it is today.

Board of Directors

The Board of Directors is the official governing body concerning all projects, programs and actions of the Barnstable High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

The Board of Directors consists of 9 members and is composed as follows:
President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, BHS Athletic Director, (1) Current Varsity Coach, (3) Directors-at-Large.

Honorary Board Members

In an effort to maintain funding to help support the perpetual, annual induction of BHS Hall of Fame members and to host the annual BHS Hall of Fame Induction Dinner, the BHS Athletic Hall of Fame Board of Directors shall be empowered to institute an Honorary Board Membership to former BHS varsity athletes who have met the minimum standard of earning at least one varsity letter. Honorary Board Membership shall be no less than $15 per annum or $100 for a lifetime membership. Honorary Board members shall have no voting privileges but may bring forth, in writing, as many nominees as they wish for consideration to induction into the BHS Athletic Hall of Fame. Nominations should be sent to: BHS Athletic Hall of Fame, P.O. Box 960, Marstons Mills, MA 02648. The deadline each year for nominations will be May 15.

The initial elected board members shall be chosen by the athletic director. Following the inaugural vote to elect a board of directors and vote to accept these bylaws as the governing constitution of this elected body, the board of directors will serve as the sole authority empowered to review nominations of former BHS athletes to be considered for enshrinement in the BHS Athletic Hall of Fame.

Board members are responsible for ensuring that all athletic eras are represented to the extent that is possible. On the initial committee, three members shall be elected for a three-year term, two members shall be elected for a two-year term and the Athletic Director shall be the only member deemed to hold “permanent” board membership status. Individuals elected after the first year shall serve a term of three years.

Should any member resign or otherwise become unable to serve during a term, a replacement shall be elected by the committee of the whole. A committee member may be elected for additional terms and or consecutive terms but may not serve longer than five consecutive terms without a motion first made, and seconded, and passed, to suspend the rules.

Roberts Rules of Order shall govern this board of directors except in any instance where Roberts Rules of Order conflicts with these bylaws.

The chairperson of the Board of Directors shall be elected by the committee. All members shall serve without compensation of any kind. The Board of Directors shall meet no less than three times per year for the purpose of electing the fall class of inductees and for planning the fall induction ceremony and dinner.

Changes in these by-laws of the Barnstable High School Athletic Hall of Fame may be made only by a majority vote of the Board of Directors with prior written notice to each member and to all honorary members.

Criteria for Nomination

Individual Athletes, Coaches and Administrators
Any Barnstable High School alumnus or alumna whose class graduated at least 10 years prior and who earned a varsity letter from the Barnstable High School athletic department is eligible for nomination to membership in the Athletic Hall of Fame.

Similarly, distinguished members of the BHS coaching staff are also eligible for nomination and membership. Any coach or administrator must have retired or departed from the High school at least five years prior to his or her nomination.

All nominees to the Hall of Fame, board members, enshrines and honorary board members must have conducted themselves in such a manner as to reflect honor upon Barnstable High School and have qualities of character and standards of conduct that are exemplary and beyond reproach.

No automatic criteria will be utilized for nomination, and special recognition may be granted where it is deemed appropriate by the selection committee.

While athletic achievement is of prime importance, moral character and good citizenship during both undergraduate and post-graduate years will be taken into consideration for individual enshrinement to the hall of fame. The record of the individual enshrined must be so outstanding that there are no questions of qualifying for the Athletic Hall of Fame.

Requests for nominations shall be made in appropriate issues of all BHS athletic media guides, newsletters, web sites or publications.

Nominations may be made by anyone, and individuals not selected shall remain on the list for consideration for a five-year period. These individuals are eligible for re-nomination. Nominations must be made in writing, including supporting evidence of the nominee’s qualifying accomplishments, and be received by the BHS HOF Committee before March 30. Nominations will not be publicly disclosed.

Induction

A charter class of 9 inductees was inducted in the year 2000. In subsequent years, the number of inductees shall be no less than five and no more than 10. In selecting those to be inducted, consideration shall at all times be given to representation of all varsity sports and of all eligible Barnstable High School student generations.

Recognition

The Board of Directors of the Barnstable High School Athletic Hall of Fame shall establish nomination and selection schedules and types of awards (for example, plaques, etc.), and presentation procedures. The permanent display of inducted honorees shall be at Barnstable High School.

Selected members shall be notified by the chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Athletic Hall of Fame.

Members will be inducted into the Barnstable High School Athletic Hall of Fame to be held in the fall of each year.

A suitable plaque will be presented to the honorees, and an appropriate permanent display or recognition will be established on the campus.

Honorary Membership

The Board of Directors may convey honorary membership to those individuals who, by virtue of their time, resources and dedication, have significantly supported, enhanced and advanced the interscholastic athletic programs of Barnstable High School. Honorary Members who have served the community with devotion, integrity and honor may qualify for induction by a unanimous vote of the board of directors, but only under strictest scrutiny and adherence to all bylaws, rules and requirements contained herein. Annual Hall of Fame inductees need only to receive a simple majority vote as long as a quorum is represented at any duly constituted meeting held specifically, and with prior notice to all members, for the intention of inducting hall of fame members.
