A Falmouth native, Caleb Fraser transferred to Barnstable High School to take advantage of its technological course of studies but little did many Red Raider fans know how critical the hulking football player’s presence would be when the autumn of 1951 rolled in.

Quickly inserted into W. Leo Shields’ powerful offensive set and one of the greatest Red & White defensive squads ever put together, Fraser brought instant leadership to one of the best teams in school history. Named co-captain of Shields’ famed gridiron 11, along with fellow hall of famer Don “Ducky” Nickula (at left, No. 77), Fraser (No. 85) led a defensive unit that allowed just 32 points on the season and he paved the way for All-American running back Ray Hostetter out of a vaunted Red & White backfield that included hall of famers Hostetter, Jack Aylmer, Nickula and Paul Thomas. Of equal importance was Fraser’s role in the discus & shotput events on Coach Shields’ track team. During and long after World War II, high school track & field in the spring fell by the wayside but it was Shields who rebuilt the sport and made it relevant once again on the Cape & Islands and he did it with the help of such top athletes as Fraser. He was inducted into the BHS Hall of Fame in 2009.
