As one-third of a triumvirate of gifted student athletes that included volleyball and tennis teammates and fellow volleyball captains Whitney Davis and Brittany Enz, Casey Buss had few peers who could match her sheer competitive fire or knack for helping her Red & White to victory.

In her four years as a varsity starter for Tom Turco, Buss helped lead the Red Raider girls to two undefeated seasons, two Massachusetts Division 1 State Championships, four Division 1 South Sectional titles and four Old Colony League championships. Bookending her four-year volleyball career, the 28-0 record of her freshman volleyball campaign in 2000 remains a school record for all teams in all sports for most victories in a season. It was also the beginning of a 99-4, four-year run that culminated in her being named the 2003 Gatorade Massachusetts High School Volleyball Player of the Year and a selection, along with Davis, to the Massachusetts All-State team. To this day, Buss is one of just seven Barnstable student athletes named as a Gatorade Player of the Year and she is in rare company with 15 other Red Raiders who have been named a Boston Globe Division 1 Player of the Year.

All of her volleyball accomplishments in and of themselves would have been enough to induct her into the BHS Athletic Hall of Fame – but volleyball is not where her Red Raider athletic career stopped. Twice a letterman for Coach Hedley Smith’s perennial tennis champions, Buss amassed a 40-1 lifetime varsity record on the doubles circuit, highlighted by a 25-1 junior campaign. In her two varsity seasons on the tennis courts, Barnstable was 43-1, twice Old Colony League champions and once the Division 1 South Sectional Champs.

In the end, Buss’s superlative varsity athletic career at BHS led her to a similar one at Ithaca College in Upstate New York where she enjoyed two years of success on the court and was named Rookie of the Week twice and ranked within top 10 of accumulated sets. She was inducted into the BHS Athletic Hall of Fame, Nov. 29, 2014.
