BIO
To this day, few student-athletes at Barnstable High School have graduated with as many honors as track & field superstar Eric Steenstra of the Class of 1984. A four-time varsity letterman in spring track & field, three-time letterman in winter indoor track and one time letterman in football (1982), Steenstra left the vaunted hallways of the Red & White with the BHS All-Time Decathalon record, all-state honors in the shuttle hurdles in indoor track (1983), was three times names the most valuable player (twice in indoor track and once in spring track), was a three-time Cape Cod Times All-Cape & Islands, 1st team representative, was state champion in both the discus and shotput and much more. He capped off his BHS career by being named the school’s 1984 Outstanding Athlete of the Year Award.
Just as importantly, Steenstra went on to matriculate at Penn State University where he captained the men’s track & field team in 1988 and 1989, was an eight-time collegiate letterman and was the eventual recipient of Penn State’s Nate Carmel Award for outstanding leadership and performance. As a member of the United States Olympic Bobsled team, Steenstra was a member of the 1989 United States National Champions and participated in numerous World Cup races in Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Calgary and Lake Placid, NY. He was inducted into the BHS Hall of Fame in 2009.
