If any single individual best exemplified the fiery, no-holds barred spirit, the devotion and unfailing character and the rare combination of intellect and physicality required to attain perfection on the football field, then it was Class of 1996’s Jon Sproul. A co-captain on a team loaded with superlative student-athletes, Jon Sproul’s drive and performance during the vaunted campaign of 1995 remains among the very best ever put forth by someone wearing the Red & White. Setting a school record with 18.0 sacks that season, Sproul, along with co-captain Mike Duffley, led Barnstable to its first and only number one ranking among Division IA football teams in Massachusetts, the first undefeated season in 44 years and a still unmatched 11-0 record.

Relentless. Inspiring. Clever. Dominant.

These are but a few of the words best used to describe the game-by-game ferocity Sproul displayed during a season that was deservingly heralded in every possible way.

A Boston Herald All-Scholastic at his defensive end slot, Sproul was a two-time Old Colony League All-Star and two time Cape Cod Times All-Cape & Islands first teamer. A recipient of the Red Raider Club Award, Sproul’s highest accolade was to be named to the prestigious Shriners South All-Star team, a recognition that helped him gamer an offer to play at Columbia Unversity, where he eventually became captain. On the basketball court, Sproul was no less exceptional, helping lead the Red Raiders to a 26-17 mark over his junior and senior seasons and earning him a captaincy in his senior season. He was inducted into the BHS Athletic Hall of Fame, Nov. 24, 2012
