As one of the famed Fermino brothers who participated in every athletic endeavor offered by BHS in the 1930s, Joseph “Joe” Fermino was no less a vital cog in the Red & White athletic machinery.

An eight-time letterman in four sports, Fermino’s greatest claim to fame very well may have come as a tight end on the legendary Billy Bangs’ gridiron dynasty of the 1920s to 1930s.

Playing four seasons for Bangs, alongside his older brother Cesar Fermino, Joe was a two-time starting offensive and defensive end who saw time on the field in each of four seasons beginning his freshman year. In that time-span, from 1931 to 1934, Fermino’s teams won four coveted Cape Cod Championships in football and outscored their opponents an astonishing 788-210.

All-totalled, the four defenses Joe played on for Bangs allowed opponents only 50 points in 1931, 58 points in 1932, 32 points in 1933 and 70 points in 1934, while putting up such gaudy numbers on offense as 251 (1931) and 240 (1934) in his senior season.

On the basketball court, Joe was a starting forward his senior year (shown in adjacent photo holding ball), while he started in right field on the baseball squad and was the top javelin thrower in track and field for the 1935 Class A South Shore Champion Red Raider harriers. Inducted into the BHS Athletic Hall of Fame, Nov. 27, 2010.
