LaVern Hurtt was such a dominant force in all three varsity sports she participated in at BHS during the late 1960s that there were few comparisons before her and frankly, few to this very day. A two-time captain for head girls basketball coach Kay Nehubian, Hurtt was the first female ever named All-League in basketball at Barnstable High School and her prowess on the parquet for the Lady Red Raiders paid off in what may be deemed as Nehubian’s coup degrace: a 17-1 mark in 1967-68 and 17 consecutive victories. The Capeway Conference Championship followed for the Red Raider girls that season and it was Hurtt, the league’s leading scorer, that made it happen.

The late, great Coach Nehubian also coached Hurtt in field hockey and softball and in her senior season, Hurtt earned her fourth varsity letter as team captain. The Team never lost more than two games in a season in her four autumns on the field hockey team and in her senior year she led the league and team in scoring.

A student-athlete who opted to skip her senior prom in order to play basketball, Hurtt proved to be iconic and in an era when female athletics played the role of poor stepsister to male athletics, her groundbreaking presence truly shined forth as a model for all Barnstable High School Red Raider female student-athletes for decades to come.

She was inducted into the Barnstable Hall of Fame in 2007.
