On November 27, 2010, Larry Nickulas joined his father, Don “Ducky” Nickulas as the first and only father-son combination thus enshrined in the BHS Athletic Hall of Fame and make no mistake, when it came to athletic prowess, the apple, as they say, literally did not fall far from the tree.

Larry Nickulas’s passion was ice hockey and he lettered all four seasons he played for BHS, eventually going onto become Most Valuable Player of the NCAA Division II National Champions at Merrimack College.

But he did not matriculate there before making his mark in the Red & White, becoming the Red Raiders’ top defenseman on the heels of the iconic John Hurley, Nickulas’s elder teammate and former captain. Nickulas, too, was captain of the Red & White and in his four-year stint on the Raider ice, the teams he played on posted an astounding 61-12-2 win-loss-tie record and the program’s first-ever undefeated season and state championship title in 1971-72 when Nickulas was a mere sophomore.

Nickulas also has the distinction of being the sole varsity Red Raider in school history to have played under three coaches – two of them hall of famers – BHS ice hockey pioneer Elliott B. MacSwan and Peter Melchiono. Nickulas played his freshman year for MacSwan, his sophomore and junior years for the legendary Don Crowley and his senior year for Melchiono in Melchiono’s first campaign at the Red Raider helm.

In golf, Nickulas had the distinction of also playing for the famed 1972 BHS State Championship golf squad and on the gridiron, he followed directly in his father’s footsteps, becoming the starting quarterback as a junior. He was inducted into the BHS Hall of Fame on November 27, 2010.
