It isn’t too often that when the powers that be sit down to hash out the most deserving candidates for induction into the BHS Athletic Hall of Fame, that those who played just one sport are deemed suitable for such an honor.
In the case of Class of l999’s Lee Dion, few multisport athletes can compare.

One of the greatest individual athletes to ever don the Red & White, Dion stepped onto the Red Raider fairways his freshman year in 1995 and never looked back. When the dust finally settled on his magnificent four-year career, this golfer had captured the Old Colony League individual title – twice – the state individual title, had played on two state champions and four league champions and was even crowned the Boston Globe Division 1 Player of the Year in his senior campaign.

But it was when Dion fired a three-over par 75 at the 72-par Springfield Country Club for the state individual title that he had truly solidified his name to be forever etched in the hearts and minds of the truest of Red Raider fans. Averaging 37.3 for his senior season – a remarkable level of play – Dion culminated his time in the Red & White with an offer to play at prestigious Elon University in North Carolina.

But at the high school level, golf is as much a team sport as it is an individual one in the professional ranks, and by that standard alone only the most elite of Red Raider athletes can compare to Dion’s record. In his four years at BHS, his golf team’s went an almost unbelievable 82-2-1, including an undefeated, 24-0 mark in 1995.

The 2003 winner of the 52nd Annual Cape Cod Amateur Open, Dion went on after college graduation to become a golf pro in Florida.
