Quite simply put, few running backs in Barnstable High School history can compare to the class of l999’s Michael C. Broughton.
In fact, of the top 15 running back performances since the program’s inception in 1893, some 120 seasons ago, Broughton is listed four times. to put that remarkable feat into perspective, Broughton’s best four games in his four ­year Red Raider varsity football career represent more than 25 percent of the best running back performances of all-time.
His 278 yards rushing and two touchdowns is the greatest game by a running back versus Falmouth since the two teams first met in 1895. It is a mark that stands to this day, for on November 26, 1998, Broughton cemented his name in Red Raider lore forever.
Only one other Red Raider running back has had more games of 200 or more yards rushing and stands among the top-15 best all-time performances, the running back who was Broughton’s understudy, Clinton Brown (5).

Broughton’s 205 yards rushing and two touchdowns versus Quincy on November 14, 1997, when he was just a junior, stands as the most yards gained on the ground by a Red Raider versus that opponent, ever. Only two fellow Red & White running backs have rushed for more yards in a single game versus Taunton and North Quincy than Broughton did. His 1,150 yards rushing in just nine games in 1998 stands as the sixth best mark all-time for a single season and only three Red Raider running backs since the late 19th century have rushed for more yardage in a single season.

To top off a nearly incomparable career from his slot at halfback, Broughton holds the distinction of having the longest run from the line of scrimmage versus Falmouth – ever: A 96-yard touchdown that he nearly duplicated in the same game with another score of 82 yards. Both touchdown runs rank not only as the two longest runs versus the archival Clippers, but stand as two of the top 10 best runs of all-time versus any and all opponents. He is one of only 10 Red Raiders at any offensive position to score four or more touchdowns in a single game.

Equally adept on the Red Raider basketball court, Broughton’s speed and agility and toughness nevertheless equalled an unheard of 32-11 win-loss mark for his four years on the gridiron including back-to-back eight-win seasons his junior and senior years as well as the vaunted 11-0, Super Bowl campaign of 1995. He was inducted into the BHS Athletic Hall of Fame, Nov. 24, 2012
