In the early 1970s, Murray Scudder emerged as one of the premier high school ice hockey players on Cape Cod and he was equally formidable on the baseball diamond as well as the football gridiron.

As a senior in 1973-74, Scudder helped lead the Red Raiders to a 13-5 campaign under first-year head coach and fellow Hall of Fame enshrinee Peter Melchiono. Scudder led the Cape & Islands in ice hockey scoring that campaign, notching 26 goals and 19 assists for a region-leading 45 points. The Red Raider captain that season, Larry Nickulas, would later become Scudder’s collegiate teammate at Merrimack where the dynamic duo helped capture the ECAC Division II Ice Hockey Championship in 1977 and the NCAA Division II National championship in 1978.

But it was on the hallowed ice at the famed Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Memorial Skating Rink that Scudder truly made his mark. During his sophomore season under first-year Barnstable High School head coach Don Crowley, Scudder played an integral role in the program’s 21-0 campaign and the school’s first-ever Division II State Ice Hockey Championship. The star-in-the-making scored 14 goals that season. HIs junior year, under Coach Crowley, Scudder performed no less admirably as the Red & White went 15-2 and watched their 25-game win streak snapped, falling to archrival Falmouth twice. All totalled, the BHS ice hockey teams with Scudder hitting the back of the net went an incredible 49-7 over three campaigns from 1971-72 to 1973-74.

On the baseball diamond,. Scudder garnered three varsity letters playing under the estimable Rollie Hicks; first as a sophomore second baseman when the Red Raiders captured the Capeway Conference Championship in 1972 at 16-4-1 and then as a junior when the Red & White took home their first SMC Division Class B Championship with a 14-10 mark. His grand slam versus Bourne in a 25-0 route was just one of three home runs on the day but has not been forgotten to this day. He was an All-Cape & Islands baseball selection in both his junior and senior seasons. He was inducted into the BHS Hall of Fame in 2009.
