As an athlete in college, Dick Norman had the rare opportunity to play baseball in the College World Series yet while baseball may have been his boyhood passion, it was as an adult, first at Old Rochester Regional High School in Mattapoisett, then for 42 years at Barnstable High School, that the Elder Statesman of Red Raider Pride truly made his mark.

Norman rejuvenated a failed boys varsity cross country program at BHS and in just two seasons captured his first of two State Championship titles – also the only two state championship titles in boys cross country in school history (1968-69). He soon went on to become Athletic Director after the retirement of fellow BHS Hall of Famer Elliott MacSwan and in 1992, Norman went on to establish one of the best varsity high school tennis program in New England as he amassed a remarkable 249-86 win-loss record through his retirement in 2008.

His seven Old Colony League championship titles in tennis, combined with his championships in boys cross country 30 years earlier, make him the sole BHS Red Raider varsity coach to capture championship titles in three different decades, almost 40 years apart. He was inducted into the BHS Hall of Fame in 2009.
