If you lived in the Town of Barnstable in the 1950s and 1960s and did not know who the gifted “Lewis Girls” were, then in all likelihood you did not pay much attention to high school sports.

But if you paid even the slightest attention to Red Raider athletics during the Golden Age of the Red and White, then, without question, you would instantaneously know who people were talking about when they referred to such stalwart Red Raider student-athletes as the Lewis sisters, like Mary, and Cynthia and of course, Sharon.

Sharon Lewis’s impact upon the Barnstable High School athletic landscape was both immediate and eye-opening: not only did she play for hall of fame coach Kay Nehubian in the top three varsity sports beginning in the fall of 1957, but she earned additional varsity letters in cheerleading as well as Nehubian’s newest entrée into the Red Raider athletic landscape at the time, varsity bowling; Lewis is the first-ever person to be inducted into the BHS athletic hall of fame who earned a letter in varsity cheerleading as well as the only five-sport varsity letterman to ever attend the school.

The Lewis girls were renowned for their athletic ability, as well as their school spirit during a time when boys’ varsity athletics seemed to take a front seat – but no matter what the headlines may have said the day after a game, few could argue that in terms of pure athletic prowess, few Red Raider peers could hold a candle to Sharon Lewis.

Named Most Valuable Player of the undefeated varsity field hockey team as a freshman? Named captain of two varsity sports as a junior? The top female basketball player on Cape Cod for three straight years? Forsaking her senior year in field hockey to become a varsity football cheerleader to try and help boost the morale of a foundering Red and White gridiron squad?

Selfless, committed, determined to win and someone the late Coach Nehubian once said was the most “coachable” and “dependable” and “gifted” athletes she ever coached in her 42 seasons at the helm of the Red and White, there is little doubt that Sharon Lewis Wege belongs amid the greatest who ever walked the hallways of Barnstable High School. She was inducted into the Barnstable High School Athletic Hall of Fame on November 27, 2010.
