The 1893 Season

HIGH SCHOOL FOOT BALL TEAM
“Interest in ‘Rugby’ is at a high water mark among the High school boys of this village.
An enthusiastic team has been organized under the management of W.R. Bowen, Captain.
It is expected that by daily practice the team will develop skill and ability able “to down” any High school on the Cape. The practice games already show much talent.
Snow at centre, supported by Thacher and Johnson as guards, is a tower of strength.
Lewis (Crowell) and Mores are proving fine tackles, and O’Neil and Chase on the ends are strong fixtures.
Horne’s brilliant work at quarter (back) will be invaluable. Hinckley and Bradford as half-backs and Bowen, the “line plunger,” will be a “Waterloo” to any visiting Napoleons. The team respectfully invites correspondence with other teams for arranging games for October and November. Address Henry Snow, Secretary, Barnstable, Mass.
Good grounds can be obtained here, and the boys will try and make it pleasant for a visiting team, both socially and in the game.”

“A fine game of football was witnessed between the Barnstable High School eleven and the Sandwich High School eleven on the Casino grounds in Sandwich Saturday (11-12-1893), which resulted in a score of 6 to 4 in favor of the latter. Considering the time they have been in practice and their weight in comparison with that of the opposing team, our high school boys played an excellent game. The first touch-down was scored by the Barnstable High School team. The names and positions are as follows:
Henry Snow, centre rush; Frank Thacher, right guard; Willie Johnson, left guard; Eddie Crowell, right tackle; Peter P. Chase, left tackle; Forest Mores, right end; Frank O’Neil, left end; Clifton Bradford, Mr. Bowen, half backs; Harold Hinckley, fall back. Willie Collins playd in place of Frank O’Neil, who was unable to be present at the game. A return game will be played at Hyannis at an early date.”

“Our football eleven were again disappointed in not being able to give the promised game with the New Bedford boys on Friday. For some reason the visitors did not put in an appearance. Quite a crowd assembled, including many from out of town. It commenced to rain however about the time the game should have been called, so perhaps it is just as well. Try again, boys.”
