Barnstable High School Football 1899

The 1899 Season

From The Hyannis Patriot, Monday Evening, October 30, 1899
“The Hyannis football eleven defeated Yarmouth on Saturday afternoon, the 21st, by the score of 17-0. This was the opneing game of the season, and played at Yarmouth.
On Saturday last our boys went to Falmouth and engaged with the home team and sustained a defeat. Score, Falmouth 14; Hyannis 0.”

From The Hyannis Patriot, Monday Evening, November 6, 1899
“The Hyannis and Yarmouth foot ball teams lined up on the field of Postmaster Geo. W. Hallett at the west end on Saturday. The score was 24 to 0 in favor of the home team. There was a large crowd of spectators, and the game was very interesting and well handled throughout.”

From The Hyannis Patriot, Monday Evening, November 13, 1899
“Another fine foot-ball game took place on the Hallett field on Saturday between the Hyannis and Sandwich team, which was won by the home team, score 23 to 0. Notwithstanding the disagreeable weather there was a large crowd present.”

From The Hyannis Patriot, Monday Evening, November 27, 1899
“The first game of football between Hyannis and Sandwich was played at Hyannis Nov. 11 and resulted in a score of Hyannis 23, Sandwich 0. A good, clean satisfactory game was played on both sides. On Saturday last a return game was played at Sandwich having five men from Bridgewater Normal School, they were held down to a score of two points, while Hyannis made six.
In the first half Holmes, Fullback, was pushed over for a touchdown aftr twelve minutes of play. Goal was kicked. The half was ended by a try for goal from field which was unsuccessful.
In the second half, Sandwich by a series of line plunges brought the ball to Hyannis four-yard line, where they were held for downs in true Yale fashion.
The punt was blocked and Chase fell on ball behind Hyannis’ line, making a safety, counting Sandwich two. Ball was on Sandwich’s three-yard line when game ended.
“On Thanksgiving day there will be a game of foot ball between the Hyannis eleven and a picked Hyannis-Boston eleven, at two o’clock in the afternoon. On Saturday, Dec. 2, the Falmouth boys will visit Hyannis for a return game.”

From The Hyannis Patriot, Monday Evening, December 4, 1899
“The game of football on Hallett’s field on Thanksgiving day was played in the presence of about 400 people, who seemed thoroughly to enjoy the sport. The score was 6-0 in favor of the Hyannis team.
Capt. Chase making a brilliant run of forty yards or more for a touchdown, and afterwards kicking the goal.
“Our football management informs us that it was through no fault of theirs that the game was not played with Falmouth on Saturday (Dec. 2, 1899) as advertised. Capt. Chase and his team were ready for business, but the Falmouth team sent word they could not (or would not?) come. As we understand they claim the Championship of Cape Cod, from the fact that they defeated a team of substitutes from here early in the season on their own grounds. Our reporter is authorized to say that the Hyannis team, having won two games each from Yarmouth and Sandwich, and then one on Thanksgiving day, stand ready to meet any team on Cape Cod, (Falmouth preferred) to defend the Championship which they claim belongs to them this, as it surely did last year, when no team was able to score against them, and Falmouth could not be induced to give them a game.”
