Barnstable High School Football 1933
Historical Notes: BHS was awarded a 1-0 victory by forfeit in its Nov. 11, 1933 match-up versus visiting Wareham. According to the 11-12-33 Cape Cod Standard Times, Barnstable led the visitors 13-0 in the third quarter, but tensions grew among the fans and players on both sides. Wareham intercepted an Edward Doudican pass at midfield and a fistfight ensued, invoking some 500 spectators to storm the playing field. Referee Jim Baldwin ejected a Wareham player (Sweeney) and Wareham coach Ray Ertel refused to allow his players back on the field, once the dust had settled. Thus, Barnstable was awarded a 1-0 victory. 1933 also marked the return of the vaunted Falmouth-Barnstable rivalry, after an 18-month layoff due to poor relations between the two programs.
