Barnstable High School Football 1944

Historical Notes: The absence of Head Coach Leo Shields — who joined the United States Navy and missed the 1944 season — combined with a fierce hurricane that closed the high school at the onset of the 1944 campaign, the BHS Red Raiders were relegated to a shortened season on the gridiron. Poor weather hampered the Red Raiders throughout the season, causing the team’s worst offensive output in the history of BHS varsity football.

It should be noted, however, that the 1944 campaign was marked by particular sadness as former BHS Varsity Captain and Quarterback William Tsiknas (Class of 1939), at age 24, was the first Hyannis native killed in action in France on Aug. 12, 1944. He was a corporal in the United States Army and was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously. He had played four years of varsity football for the Red & White.
