Barnstable High School Football 1951
Historical Notes: The Red Raiders finished their glorious 1951 season ranked sixth in Eastern Massachusetts behind five other undefeated teams. An effort was made by coach Leo Shields to stage a “State Championship” game but there were no takers and a high school rule prohibited teams from playing more than nine games in a season at the time. Halfback and kick returner extraordinaire Ray Hostetter Jr. was named a High School All-American and led the Cape with 12 touchdowns and 12 PATs for a total of 84 points. Teammate Paul Thomas was no slouch in the scoring department either, notching 10 TDs and 9 PATs for 69 total points on the season. Halfback Don “Ducky” Nickula added to the Red Raiders’ potent offense, scoring 7 TDs and 1 PAT for 43 points, followed by Barry Sturgis with 6 TDs (36), Harry Maddox (2 TDs) and Jackie Aylmer (2 TDs).
