Barnstable High School Football 1962
Historical Notes: On Aug. 22, 1962, W. Leo Shields (BHS Class of ’32) and longtime BHS Athletic Director (1947-1962) and head football coach (1942-1953), died, leaving behind a legacy of winning and accomplishment few in Barnstable have ever attained. On 11-22-1962, the football field at Barnstable High School, just two years old, was named in his honor. The Red Raiders have played at W. Leo Shields Memorial Field ever since. A graduate and standout athlete at Holy Cross, Shields was the recipient of the vaunted Lawlor Medal for excellence in scholarship and athletics. Shields played for the Red Raiders for Billy Bangs from 1928-1931
