Red Raiders Open Season With 29-28 Victory Over Durfee

For Immediate Release - Courtesy Cape Cod Sports Report®

FALL RIVER — Freshman quarterback D.J. Crook, son of first-year BHS head coach Doug Crook, went 18-32 in the air last night for 206 yards and threw two touchdown passes to senior captain Isaiah Voegeli to pace the Red Raiders to a 29-28 season-opening victory. Crook also threw what amounted to the game-winning score when he caught Voegeli on a short route in the corner of the end zone on a PAT attempt. Junior running back Brett Sullivan carried the ball 15 times for 122 yards rushing and also scored a pair of touchdowns. Marcus Carter punched in a PAT and Anthony Cugini added a PAT kick to round out the offensive side of things. Senior captain and wide receiver John Gomes takced on six receptions for 70 yards.

Top defensive efforts were turned in by noseguard Eric Trotto who had two sacks, sophomore PJ Edmonds who had a pair of jaw-dropping sacks for losses and Dan Hebenstreit, Jim Needham and Dave Tierno also turned in phenomenal defensive efforts for the Red & White. Anthony Cugini and Peter Bertucci also had sacks and played well, as did defensive backs Shon Powell and Luke McGuinness.

Crook's performance was one for the history books as no freshman in the 116-year history of the program has ever turned in as many yards passing in his first game.

For Immediate Release - Courtesy Cape Cod Sports Report®

HYANNIS — Former Dennis-Yarmouth star quarterback and Massachusetts Maritime Academy captain Doug Crook, who served last season as the freshmen football coach at BHS under former head coach Paul "Spanky" Demanche, was hired yesterday to serve as the school's new varsity head football coach.

Crook held a meeting last week for prospective football candidates and 117 players attended, not including this year's projected incoming freshmen football class of up to 35 players.

The Quarterback Club will be hosting a "Meet the New Coach" Night at BHs on Monday, Feb. 4, in the senior cafe, from 7:30-8:30 p.m.

Barnstable Defeats Falmouth, 19-12, in Turkey Day Battle!

For Immediate Release - Courtesy Cape Cod Sports Report®

FALMOUTH — The Red Raiders made up their minds, banded together and brought home sweet glory Thursday after defeating archrival Falmouth 19-12 at Elmer "Guv" Fuller Field in downtown Falmouth in the 120th meeting, all-time, between the two teams.

Defensive end and co-captain Jared Broberg set the tone just a minute and a half into the first quarter when he scooped up a fumble and rumbled 59 yards into paydirt to make it 6-0.

Garrett Mills then had a 70-yard punt return touchdown called back for an illegal block in the back, and Falmouth gained a little momentum, scoring on an Andrew Vitigliano 54-yard touchdown rush in the late second quarter. Falmouth's two-point PAT attempt failed and the score was knotted at 6-6.

Barnstable quarterback John Gomes then looked in the end zone for 6'5" split end Mike Brown but Gomes's pass was tipped. Fortunately, senior co-captain and tight end Drew Sifflard was alert and made a beautiful diving catch in the end zone of the deflected pass to make it 12-6. The Red Raiders' 2-point PAT attempt failed, but Barnstable had a lead it would not relinquish at 12-6.

Senior running back Garrett Mills caught a beautiful Gomes' pass in the fourth quarter for a gain of 21 yards that set up a 5-yard Mills touchdown rush to make it 18-6. Senior kicker Mike Pernick then booted it threw the uprights to m ake it 19-6. Falmouth's Terrence Dineen gave the Clippers some hope with 3:32 remaining in the game when he plunged in from the one to make it 19-12, but Barnstable managed the clock well and slowly trudged up the field to eat up the remaining time on the clock and take home the Turkey Day championship trophy.

Sophomore running back Brett Sullivan was phenomenal on both sides of the ball collecting 7.0 tackles and churning up 130 yards on 19 carries.

Red Raiders Can't Break Out of Funk, Fall to Taunton, 40-20

For Immediate Release - Courtesy Cape Cod Sports Report®

TAUNTON— In spite of another great game rushing by sophomore sensation Brett Sullivan (14 carries/117 yards/TD), and solid games from Garrett Mills and John Gomes, the Red Raiders ran out of gas Sunday afternoon against the Taunton Tigers and fell, 40-20.

Down at halftime, 14-6, Barnstable came back to tie it at 14-14 and kept the game close through the third quarter at 27-20, but a fumbled kick return and quick score by Taunton quickly eroded Barnstable's hope for a win and Taunton took off through the fourth quarter to make it 40-20. BHS hosts Bridgewater-Raynham this Friday night at W. Leo Shields Memorial Field.

Red Raiders Bow Down to Dartmouth's Offensive Prowess, 42-7

For Immediate Release - Courtesy Cape Cod Sports Report®

HYANNIS — In spite of a brilliant rushing effort by sophomore Brett Sullivan (14 carries/116 yards), it just wasn't enough to stave the offensive tide of the visiting Dartmouth Indians tonight (Friday, Oct. 12) as running back extraordinaire Jordan Todman rushed for three touchdowns in the first half and had 164 yards on nine carries. He carried the ball three more times in the third quarter for a total of 12 carries and 177 yards on the evening. Dartmouth quarterback Sean Sylvia was no less dangerous as the speedy helmsman tallied up 87 yards rushing and ran in two touchdowns and passed for another 104 yards and a touchdown. Owen Higham also scored for Dartmouth. Todman's 177 yards put him over the 1,000-yard mark for the season at 1,057. Dartmouth is 5-1. BHS falls to 1-5 and o-1 in the OCL.

Barnstable quarterabck John Gomes had a tough time finding an open receiver throughout the night and went 4-10 for 22 yards, including a short goal line pass to Isaiah Voegeli for Barnstable's sole score of the evening. Senior kicker Mike Pernick had the PAT kick, but the score was out of reach at 29-7 by the time BHS hit paydirt.

Senior captain and defensive end Rob Bancroft had a solid game with 4.5 tackles and a sack, his team-leading 4th of the season. BHS has the week off before heading to Taunton on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 1:00 p.m. The game will be held at Bristol Voke Tech.

Barnstable Can't Solve New Bedford Puzzle, Fall Hard to Whalers, 41-19

For Immediate Release - Courtesy Cape Cod Sports Report®

NEW BEDFORD — With senior captains Jordan Looby and Drew Sifflard out of commission -- possibly for much of the remainder of the season -- the 1-3 Barnstable Red Raiders had their work cut out for them last night at Paul Walsh Memorial Field even though they faced an 0-3 Whalers team.

Barnstable was in the game through the first quarter and was down 14-7 after a 39-yard touchdown reception by senior Pat Fulham, but Fulham was soon sidelined with a knee injury and his absence was quickly compounded with a questionable pass interference call that put the hosts in the red zone.

The Whalers jumped the score to 21-7 with 6:40 remaining in the first half, but Barnstable still refused to go down easily, countering the Whalers' score with a 1-yard touchdown plunge by quarterback John Gomes. The score at halftime was 21-13 and the Red Raiders still had an opportunity to take control of the game.

But control is precisely what the Whalers did, putting in three more score before the dust settled. The usually tough Barnstable defense simply had no answers for the potent New Bedford offense and without Fulham and Looby in the backfield, Barnstable simply could not gain any yardage on the ground. All totalled, Barnstable 34 yards rushing for the entire evening on 26 carries.

The highlight was a handful of explosive, tough runs by sophomore Brett Sullivan who notched his first touchdown of the seasonwith 2:45 left in the third quarter to make it 28-19. Gomes's passing continued to lead the OCL quarterbacks last night as he went 6-13 for 105 yards and threw for one touchdown.

Barnstable Falls to Fighting Fishermen, 28-20

For Immediate Release - Courtesy Cape Cod Sports Report®

HYANNIS — Senior captains Jordan Looby and Drew Sifflard played their hearts out as the host Red Raiders staged a quick, 14-0 lead over the visiting Gloucester Fighting Fishermen but both may have been lost for the season as Looby sustained a serious arm injury and Sifflard may have suffered a concussion.

Barnstable could not seem to recover from the loss of their two captains as Gloucester scored four straight touchdowns before Barnstable punched one in with 0:20 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore safety Brett Sullivan once again paced the BHS defense with 12.0 tackles on the day and senior Pat Fulham scored all three Barnstable touchdowns. Junior quarterabck John Gomes played exceptionally well, going 7-16 in the air with two touchdown passes and 100 yards.

Fulham scored Barnstable's first touchdown, a 36-yard run in the first quarter, followed by a 37-yard touchdown reception from Gomes and then a five-yard reception from Gomes in the third quarter. Senior Mike Pernick went 2-3 on PAT kicks. Senior Graham Banks also played well defensively for the Red Raiders as did Fulham who had 7.5 tackles. Banks had 5.0 tackles.  Senior captain Rob Bancroft had 2.5 tackles including a sack. Jim Needham and Daniel Glenn each had fumble recoveries for the Red Raiders who were ranked 99th in the state last week. Gloucester was ranked 6th in the state by the Boston Globe prior to today's game.

Barnstable Ekes Out Win Over Lexington on the Road, 8-7

For Immediate Release - Courtesy Cape Cod Sports Report®

LEXINGTON — Senior captain Jared Broberg may not have realized it at the time, but his six punts on fourth downs in Thursday night's (Sept. 20) game at Lexington helped pave the way toward victory in the Red Raiders' first win of the 2007 campaign. All totalled, Broberg had three punts that went 50 yards or more, including one that went 66 yards. The longest punt in BHS Red Raider history was by Joe Hassett in 1959, a 70-yarder.

Lexington drew first blood with a first quarter touchdown and PAT kick to make it 7-0, and that's the way the score would stay until the fourth quarter when senior halfback Pat Fulham leaped into the end zone for six points, followed by quarterabck Isaiah Voegeli's two-point PAT rush to make it 8-7.

Jordan Looby paced the defensive unit from his slot at middle linebacker, collecting 7.0 tackles in all, followed sophomore defensive back Brett Sullivan (5.0), senior captain and defensive end Rob Bancroft (5.0) and defensive tackle Jonathan Wenger (5.0).

Barnstable Falls to D-Y, 24-23, at Allen Carlsen Field in South Yarmouth

For Immediate Release - Courtesy Cape Cod Sports Report®

S. YARMOUTH — Senior captain Jordan Looby picked up 106 yards rushing on 13 carries and scored two touchdowns, added 5.5 tackles on defense including a sack and basically tried his best to inspire the Red Raiders to victory.

But it was not enough as the host Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins, now 2-0, edged the visiting Red Raiders, 24-23 before a packed house at Allen Carlsen Field.

Garrett Mills scored a touchdown, Pat Fulham caught a 2-point conversion pass and Isaiah Voegeli ran another two-point PAT in. Senior kicker Mike Pernick booted his first extra point PAT of the year.

For the second straight week, sophomore Brett Sullivan proved to be a one-man wrecking crew on defense as he led the team with 8.0 tackles.

Tight end Drew Sifflard had a pair of nifty catches for over 50 yards on the day. Quarterback John Gomes, a junior, paced the potent BHS offense by going 7-11 and 115 yards in the air.

Still, it was not enough to offset a 75-yard touchdown run on the first play of the game by kick returner and running back extraordinaire Joe Jamiel of the Dolphins. Jamiel carried for well over 100 yards on the day.

Barnstable Falls to Durfee in 2007 Season Opener

For Immediate Release - Courtesy Cape Cod Sports Report®

HYANNIS — When senior captain and fullback Jordan Looby punched through the Durfee defense at 9:26 in the second quarter, it looked like this year’s version of the Barnstable Red Raiders had shed some of the ghosts of its recent past and was on its way to a great start for the 2007 campaign.
But some special teams miscues, underclassmen jitters and some apparent weak links in the Red Raider defense all added up through the remainder of this season opener to give Durfee a firm, 28-12 victory.
Barnstable and Durfee first met on October 17, 1931 and in that storied 9-2 season for Barnstable it ended up being one of two minor blemishes on a championship season. Durfee overran Barnstable that day, 31-13 and last Friday night’s affair at W. Leo Shields Memorial Field appeared, if nothing else, to remind the local faithful of the past five losing seasons. If only...
Barnstable enters 2007 at 0-1 on the heels of a 3-6 season last year, back-to-back 2-8 campaigns in 2005 and 2004 and a 5-6 mark in 2002. In 2002, Barnstable went 9-3 and captured the Old Colony League championship.
      But that was then.
Last Friday night the Red Raiders went ahead 6-0 on a three-yard dive by the aforementioned captain Looby, missed the point after attempt and then watched as Durfee scored three straight touchdowns and converted all of its PATs en route to a 21-6 lead by the end of the third quarter.
Red Raider junior quarterback James Gomes netted Barnstable’s second score of the day at the 10:01 mark in the fourth frame but the damage had been done.
Durfee’s running back extraordinaire Cameron Pontes punched in his second touchdown of the day in direct response to Gomes’s score and the end came soon thereafter, a 28-12 defeat for the home squad.
Sophomore Brett Sullivan, a Barnstable native who attended Boston College High School for his freshman school year last year and who returned to BHS this season, proved to be of nearly immeasurable value to the Red Raider Eleven.
All totalled, Sullivan tallied 9.5 tackles from his spot at free safety.followed by captains Jared Broberg and Looby with 4.5 and 4.0 tackles apiece, respectively.
Senior lineman and captain Rob Bancroft also played well defensively for the Red Raiders, turning in 3.5 tackles.
But offensively, the need for a real “playmaker” in the style of a Stefan Gomes, a Clinton Brown or a Mike Duffley of yore could not have been more apparent as the Red Raider running backs were repeatedly stymied up front.
Ultimately, Barnstable was forced to try and air it out and more than often had receivers open downfield, but the connection could not be made. Quarterback Gomes, however, did show he had a knack for the running game with eight carries for 42 yards. Senior Garrett Mills gained 44 yards in all and Looby had 41 yards. Senior pat Fulham gained 27 yards on the ground to add to the above, but the total of these four backs seemed more like the cumulative output of one typical Barnstable running back of yesteryear.
Gomes went 2-11 passing for 18 yards and threw one interception.
Problems with special teams — namely, the kick/punt return units — reared their collective ugly heads on virtually every return attempt the Red Raiders had throughout the game. For the few returns that were fielded cleanly, almost no yards were gained as Durfee’s defensive unit flew down the field to seal off all avenues of hope.
Barnstable’s lifetime record versus Durfee fell to 10-14 after the defeat. Last season, the Red Raiders opened the season with a 21-20 win at Durfee and went 2-1 on the season before falling to 3-6 when the dust finally settled.
Head coach Paul “Spanky” Demanche is now in his 19th season at the Red Raider helm and he is the longest-tenured varsity football coach in the 115-year history of Barnstable Red Raider football. he is also the most winningest head football coach with a lifetime record, now, after Friday’s loss, of 103-76-3.
Tonight, Barnstable hits the road to South Yarmouth where it will face a much-improved and hungry Dennis-Yarmouth squad that last year shocked the Red Raiders with its first defeat of Barnstable in 30 years, 19-13.
The D-Y Dolphins are coming off a complete shellacking of Wareham, 35-8, last Friday night and are primed to welcome Barnstable to South Yarmouth for the first time since 1986.
That season, the Red Raiders went 3-7 under former head coach Mark Titus. Barnstable defeated D-Y that day, nevertheless, 6-2.

OCL All-Star Fullback Zach Wilson Signs National Letter of Intent

For Immediate Release

HYANNIS, MA -- A two-way gridiron starter since his sophomore year, Barnstable High School senior Zach Wilson received one of his greatest accolades Wednesday morning (Feb. 7) when he signed his NCAA National Letter of Intent to Bryant University in Smithfield, RI, where he will receive a full scholarship (50% athletic, 25% academic, 25% grant) to play football.

Wilson is a three-time OCL All-Star in football and two-time OCL All-Star in baseball. He is also a two time All-Cape & Islands all-star in both sports and this year was ranked as one of the top football players in the state by the Boston Herald.

Wilson's leadership by example on the Red Raiders' gridiron and no-nonsense attitude were essential reasons why he was named a team captain in 2006.

The senior classman had some memorable games for the Red & White Eleven, including a 105-yard rushing performance versus Falmouth in 2004, as well as a 138-yard performance versus Division 1 powerhouse Brockton in 2005.

Wilson is expected to play an integral role as a fullback and linebacker for the Bryant University Bulldogs and Head Coach Marty Fine. Since he took the helm at Bryant three seasons ago, the Bulldogs have gone 4-5, 7-2 and last season, 8-3. The Bulldogs boasted one of the nation's top running backs last season in Lorenzo Perry who rushed for 1,924 yards and had the third-best yards rushing per game average in the country at 174.1.

Wilsonis expected to work again this summer for the Cotuit Athletic Association while also training for the 2007 collegiate football season. He lives in Cummaquid with his parents, Bob & Linda Wilson. Wilson's father, Bob Wilson, earned the Red Raider Coaches' Award in 1978 after four years on the BHS gridiron. The elder Wilson was also a letterman in track and baseball at BHS.

Former BHS Grid Star Sifflard Rakes in Postseason Honors, Awards at USCGA

For Immediate Release

HYANNIS, MA -- Silent but violent is what he was -- and also through last fall at the United States Coast Guard Academy -- when he donned the Red & White and captained the 2002 Barnstable High School Red Raiders to their last winning season (9-3) and an Old Colony League Championship.

It is a personal characteristic trait that has served Coast Guard senior classman Ryan Sifflard well as he led the Academy's gridiron squad to a 7-3 season in his 3rd year as a starting offensive guard. The 6'2" 250-lb. blocking juggernaut has reaped the postseason awards like no other former Red Raider in recent history.

Sifflard was named this week to the 2006 Division 3 All-East Team (honorable mention), was named Most Valuable Player of the New England Football Conference, garnered first-team all-conference honors, and was named the 2006 NEFC Offensive Lineman of the Year.

Sifflard is used to the gridiron accolades by now as he was an OCL all-star and three-sport letterman at BHS, graduating in 2003 (Football, Basketball, Baseball). He led the Red Raiders in tackles with 59 in his senior year as the Red & White captured the Old Colony League Championship title.

Sifflard's younger brother Drew, sidelined last season with a shoulder injury, was one of the team leaders in tackles before his season ended after the third game of 2006.

Now fully recuperated, the younger Sifflard is expected to return to the BHS gridiron in the fall of 2007 for his senior year. Drew has also lettered in lacrosse.

Quarterback Club Hosts 77th Annual Football Postseason Awards Banquet

The Barnstable Quarterback Club, in place as the key BHS Red Raiders football booster club since 1967, and the successor of the original Barnstable Athletics Boosters founded in 1948 by the late Ray Hostetter Sr., BHS Principal Briah Connor and BHS Hall of Famer W. Leo Shields, hosted the 77th Annual BHS Red Raiders Postseason Awards Banquet earlier this evening (Dec. 10), with several football players and cheerleaders recongized for achievement beyond the norm.

Senior cheerleading captain Jordan Robinson was awarded a plaque for being named an Old Colony League All-Star. The annual "Spirit Award" went to Andrea Camillio. The Red Raiders varsity cheerleaders were also noted for finishing in second place in Eastern Massachusetts in MIAA Division 1 competition this fall.

This year's recipient of the Thanksgiving Day Game Most Valuable Player Award, given out each season since 1957 and now known as the William F. McGoldrick Memorial Award, went to senior offensive and defensive lineman David Wiseman.

The Jean G. Hinkle Memorial Athletic Award, the first postseason honor ever created for the Red Raiders football team (1935) for sportsmanship both on and off the field, went to senior lineman Jerald "Jake" Fulham.

The Raymond E. Hostetter Jr. Award, deemed one of the highest possible honors a Red Raider football player can receive, went to senior defensive back Ross Hickey.

The Ronald Hosie Sportsmanship Award went to senior special teams player Kyle Bates.

The Red Raider Coaches' Award went to Brian Jenkins.

"From the first day of practice this young man impressed me," said first year assistant coach David Hamshire.

The Joseph Borsari Award went to senior lineman Ken Birely.

For many years, the Quarterback Club gave the team's best lineman recognition with the Outstanding Lineman of the Year Award. Quarterback Club president Bill Sifflard opted to bring the award back into the fold this postseason and redubbed the honor the Heart and Drive Outstanding Lineman of the year Award. This year's award went to center C.J. Ellis.

Red Raiders Fall to Falmouth, 14-12

In spite of a stellar, 117-yard, 2-touchdown performance by tailback Dean Tillman (22 carries), and three quarters of the toughest defense it played all season, Barnstable could not muster enough to defeat the visiting Falmouth High School Clippers Saturday (Nov. 25) in the 112th year the two teams have played against each other.

Saturday's 14-12 loss was supposed to be the 80th Thanksgiving Day game played between the two teams but the game was moved to Saturday due to predictions of poor weather on Wednesday. The announcement came just hours before the Thanksgiving Day Parade and Pep Rally, which went off without a hitch.

Senior tri-captain and fullback Zach Wilson carried the ball 9 times for 66 yards including a 25-yard jaunt in the third quarter. He also led the defense with 4.5 tackles on the day, followed by Rob Bancroft (4.0 tackles), senior tri-captain and middle linebacker C.J. Ellis (4.0 tackles), senior defensive tackle Dave Wiseman (4.0 tackles) and senior strong safety Ross Hickey (2.5 tackles). Pat Fulham also had 2.5 tackles and a fumble recovery.

Senior quarterback Ryan Tremblett had an off game, of sorts, going 1-8 in the air and collecting just 48 yards on 14 carries.

Turkey Day Game Postponed to Saturday

Today's 10:00 a.m. Thanksgiving Day Game between Barnstable and Falmouth -- the 80th game played between the two teams on Thanksgiving Day -- was postponed yesterday by Steve Francis, BHS Athletic Director, in cooperation with Falmouth High School Athletic Director Kathleen Burke. The "Game" will be played on Saturday, Nov. 25, at 3:00 p.m. at W. Leo Shields Memorial Field.

Regardless, the re-establishment of the annual Thanksgiving Day Parade and Pep Rally, a tradition dating back to 1945, went off without a hitch yesterday as thousands of spectators and BHS Red Raiders fans came to celebrate in anticipation of the Barnstable-Falmouth rivalry, the fifth oldest high school football rivalry in the state.

Falmouth and Barnstable have played against each other a documented total of 119 times, contrary to published reports. A complete list of games played between the two teams may be found in our redraiderpride.com archives section. In the course of 23 different seasons, the two schools played each twice -- typically, but not always -- on Columbus Day and Thanksgiving Day.

Four Red Raiders Named to OCL All-Star Team

BHS Red Raider Head Coach Paul "Spanky" Demanche announced last night (Nov. 15) that four of his star players have been named as 2006 Old Colony League All-Stars. They include: C.J. Ellis (Center), Jake Fulham (Offensive tackle), Zach Wilson (Defensive Tackle) and Dave Wiseman (Defensive tackle). Congratulations to all four players!

Former Red Raider Captain Ryan Sifflard Named

NEFC Offensive Lineman of the Year

United States Coast Guard Academy starting offensive guard Ryan Sifflard (Class of 2007), who led the BHS Red Raiders as captain of the 2002 OCL Champions and a 9-3 record, was named the New England Football Conference Offensive Lineman of the Year this week.

Sifflard's US Coast Guard team is 8-2 this season. His younger brother Drew Sifflard is a junior at BHS and is a linebacker and halfback for the Red Raiders.

Barnstable Welcomes Taunton and Defeats the Tigers, 25-13

Quarterback Ryan Tremblett ran for two touchdowns and had 86 yards rushing on 10 carries while going 3-6 in the air and 96 yards for another TD to lead the Red Raiders to a 25-13 win over Taunton Friday night at W. Leo Shields Memorial Field.

The Red Raiders are now 3-3 on the season while 36th-ranked Taunton falls to 3-4. Barnstable is now one-win better than its final record of the past two seasons. Zach Wilson ran for 63 yards on 15 carries and scored a touchdown while split end Donny Campbell pulled in a 74-yard TD pass from Tremblett. Dean Tillman had an off night in the Red Raider backfield, picking up just 15 yards on 12 carries.

Pat Fulham led the Barnstable defense with 5.5 tackles and a critical first quarter interception in the end zone on Taunton's first drive of the game. Barnstable heads to Bridgewater-Raynham next Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Red Raiders Fall to New Bedford in OT, 21-19

Dean Tillman had two touchdowns and 78 yards on 20 carries, while Ryan Tremblett went 6-9 passing with 81 yards, but it was not enough to capture what would have been a huge win for Barnstable over the visiting New Bedford High School Whalers.
BHS went to the locker room at halftime with a 13-0 lead, but on the heels of a minor injury to fullback Zach Wilson, things went south from there.
Wilson took off on a 30-yard jaunt to the New Bedford 45-yard line in the third quarter, but was tackled from behind in full stride and had to come out of the game until it was 13-13 and in overtime.
New Bedford scored two TDs in the last 6:30 minutes of regulation time to tie it 13-13 and the game went into overtime. New Bedford scored first and then punched in the two-point conversion to make it 21-13. Tillman scored a TD on a 10-yard rush but the game ended when a two-point PAT up the gut failed.
C.J. Ellis led the Barnstable defense with 7.5 tackles. Bob Bancroft picked up a critical 4th quarter fumble by New Bedford, but on the ensuing play, Barnstable fumbled right back to the visitors and New Bedford capitalized.

Red Raiders Stage 4th Quarter Surge to Defeat Somerset, 22-19

Dean Tillman rushed for 175 yards on27 carries and two 2-point PAT conversions, to lead the BHS Red Raiders to a 22-19 victory over Somerset on Saturday afternoon at the Blue Raiders' Hanson Memorial Field. Barnstable is now 2-1 on the season heading into this Friday night's game versus New Bedford at W. Leo Shields Memorial Field.
Friday night (Oct. 6) is Homecoming at Barnstable High School.
Zach Wilson paced the Red Raiders' scoring attack with two touchdowns and 66 yards rushing on 17 carries. Pat Fulham had one touchdown reception and four tackles and two interceptions on defense for Barnstable.

Congratulations to Zach Wilson

Senior captain Zach Wilson was mentioned last weekend in the Boston Herald as one of the top 12 football players in the state of Massachusetts. Congratulations to Zach!
