Notable Collegiate Highlights of Former BHS Football Players

Mickey Fein (BHS '95)Drafted as a free agent by the Detroit Lions in 1998, Fein had just come off of a brilliant collegiate career with the Black Bears of Maine. In his four collegiate seasons, the former Barnstable Red Raider stalwart finished with more passing records than any quarterback in school history. In the end, Fein had set the Maine records for most completions in a Game (38), most completions in a season (236), most completions in a career (644), most passes attempted in a game (62), most passes attempted in a season (428), most passes attempted in a career (1,208), most career interceptions (43), most yards passing in a game (522), most yards passing in a season (2,885), most touchdowns passed in a game (6), most touchdowns passed in a season (27), highest average yards per game (288.5), most total plays in a game (74), most total plays in a season (468), most total plays in a career (1,372), most yards passed in a game (499) and most yards passed in a season (2,855). To cap his collegiate career off, Fein was the recipient of the Harold Westerman Most Valuable Player Award in 1998.

Kyle Porter (BHS '96)After red-shirting his freshman season, Porter stepped into big shoes at Northeastern University, eventually being named captain when he switched from offensive tackle to center. Porter, who had shown great promise as a part-time starting tackle in his first two years, was given a shot at the opening despite having no experience at the position. The coaching staff regarded Porter as one of the team’s most knowledgable linemen and that football sense translated perfectly into his new role as the heart of the offensive front line. He convinced the coaches he was the man for the job with a steady performance in spring practice and had an outstanding first season, starting all 11 games. Now he will look to follow in the footsteps of Huber and cap his career with an honor-filled season as a team captain. 1999: Anchored offensive line at center in all 11 contests...Huskies set school game record for total offense with 600 yards (300 passing and 300 rushing) in his debut at center in the season opener against AIC...offensive line was plagued by injuries but still provided more-than-ample protection for NU’s three different starting quarterbacks; team combined to complete 213 passes, the second-highest total in school history. 1998: Played backup to Jon McRae at left tackle in successful offensive line group that gave QBs room to throw school-record 24 touchdown passes...nagged by knee injury. 1997: After redshirting the 1996 campaign, opened ’97 as a reserve at left tackle...moved into starting role against Rhode Island, Delaware and William & Mary before knee injury ended his year...offense set school records for scoring (320) and total TDs (42). 1996: Redshirt season. High School: Earned letters in football and track at Barnstable High...as a senior offensive lineman, named Old Colony League All-Star, Boston Globe All-Scholastic and Cape Cod Times All-Star...helped lead Red Raiders to an 11-0 year and the Division IA Super Bowl title in final year; team was ranked No. 1 in Massachusetts and No. 2 in New England...shot putter on the track team.

Ryan Johnson (BHS '97)Currently ranked first on the Hartwick College all-time receiving list for touchdowns scored with 44, second all-time with receiving yards (3,337) and third all-time with 168 pass receptions. He is also currently ranked 4th all-time in points scored (264). Johnson, who helped lead the 1995 BHS squad to an 11-0 season and Super Bowl Championship Title, played at Hartwick College from 1998-2001.

Ray Hostetter, Jr. (BHS '56)One of Maine's proud few to be listed as an All-Yankee Conference/Atlantic 10 selection in 1956, Hostetter was the school's leading rusher from the halfback slot in 1955 and 1956. Scoring an amazing 84 points for the BHS Red & White in its vaunted 9-0, undefeated season of 1951, Hostetter would later go on to become a familiar face along the BHS sidelines as an assistant and head coach. Certainly one of the all-time greatest to ever wear a Barnstable uniform, Hostetter is considered by many alumni to be one of, if not the greatest, halfbacks to ever play in this town. Hostetter's father, Ray Sr., founded the BHS Athletics Booster Club, the forefather of the BHS Quarterback Club.

W. Leo Shields (BHS '32)Named to the prestigious All-Eastern Team following his senior year at Holy Cross, the speedy and tough tight end had only begun to scratch the surface of an illustrious career in athletics, the greater bulk of it spent within the confines of the hometown he so loved. Leo Shields played on 3 Cape Cod Champions football squads at BHS from 1928-1931, all for the estimable William P. "Billy" Bangs. Captain of the track team, a four-sport lettermen (track, football, baseball and basketball) at BHS, Shields defined what it meant to be a Red Raider. His first stint at coaching was as an assistant to Elliott B. MacSwan who, interestingly enough, would not succeed Shields as the BHS athletic director until Shields' untimely death on Aug. 22, 1962. The current BHS gridiron was brand new that season, and thus, it was only fitting that it be named for a man who had devoted his life to the Red & White. On the morning of the 1962 Thanksgiving Day battle versus Falmouth, the BHS Football Field was aptly renamed W. Leo Shields Memorial Field. An honorable mention All-American his senior year at Holy Cross, Shields went on to serve as the head football coach at BHS (1943-1953) and served as athletic director from 1947 until 1962.

Jeremy Gobeil (BHS '90)Former BHS gridder and captain received the prestigious Joseph Zabilski Award for his dedication to the varsity football program while playing at Northeastern. Named Huskies' captain following his junior season.

Mark Joyce (BHS '86)This fiery competitor proved to be the backbone of the 1989 MMA defensive unit, and was a senior captain en route to being named to the New England Conference 2nd Team.

Jon Sproul (BHS '96) Arguably one of the best defensive ends to ever don the Red + White, this former Red Raider captain proved equally formidable on the Columbia University gridiron. All-Cape & Islands and a Boston Herald All-Scholastic following his team's 1995 undefeated, Super Bowl Championship season, Sproul went on to captain the Columbia defense and lettered three times as a starter on the Lions' defense.

Bryan Tobey (BHS '85) Former BHS stalwart went on to star at Grambling for all-time great Eddie Robinson, collecting 769 yards rushing and 6 TDs his senior year. Voted by the media as the Most Valuable Player of the Bayou Classic in the Louisiana Superdome (1988), Tobey rushed for 103 yards on 19 carries with one jaunt of 36 yards. He was ranked 3rd in the SWAC in rushing his senior year with 86.4 yards rushing per game.

Mike Dwyer (BHS '82)This top former BHS gridder developed his skills at UMass-Amherst, enough so he earned a spot on the Dallas Cowboys when the NFL went on strike in 1987. Taking advantage of the opportunity presented to him, Dwyer earned the defensive game ball versus the N.Y. Jets on 10-4-87 after collecting two sacks, 9 tackles and recovering one fumble from his slot at defensive tackle.

John Ellis (BHS '77)This former BHS Outstanding Lineman and track star went on to Captain the University of Rhode Island to the 1981 NCAA Div. I-AA National Championship and following his collegiate career inked a brief deal with the New England Patriots as a free agent. While at BHS he set several shotput and discus records which still stand today.

Jamie Chase (BHS '92)This stalwart running back went on from the Red Raider gridiron to set new standards at UMass-Dartmouth and ranks fourth all-time in rushing yards with 2,022 from his four-year career (1991-1994). Sadly, Chase passed away in 2003. Nevertheless, his exploits on the UMass-Dartmouth stand as a testimony to the type of player he was. On 451 carries, he averaged 4.48 yards per carry and had 15 lifetime touchdowns. the UMass-Dartmouth football alumni club is named in Jamie's honor for the number he wore; aptly named "The '34s", his number was sewn on the UMass-Dartmouth team's football jackets the season he passed away. He was co-captain of the 1994 team that went 8-2 and was NEFC Champions and ECAC Bowl Finalists. The team was recently inducted into the UMass-Dartmouth Athletic Hall of Fame.
