Barnstable Falls to B-R, 13-12, in Close Contest

Nov. 6, 2004

It is almost incredible that in its past two games, the difference in Barnstable's entire season hinged upon two points.

But that's it, folks. Two points. Last week on Homecoming Weekend, the Red Raiders fell to 18th ranked Taunton, 13-12, with two critically failed PAT attempts spelling the difference between victory and defeat.

On Saturday, the difference was once again a single point when Barnstable fell to host Bridgewater-Raynham -- ranked 13th in the state -- by the same margin, 13-12.

The Taunton win over Barnstable last week gave the Tigers momentum as it went on to slaughter 4th ranked Marshfield, 35-7; combined with B-R's win over Barnstable Saturday afternoon, the Old Colony League title now hinges upon the upcoming Taunton-Bridgewater-Raynham match up.

The Red Raiders were -- to reiterate -- just two points shy of being right in the hunt with both aforementioned clubs.

Down 13-0, Bobby Nunes took a 20-yard pass from quarterback Kevin Riley to narrow it down to 13-6 on the heels of a C.J. Ellis fumble recovery at the B-R 20 with 0:55 seconds left in the fitrst half. The two-point PAT failed.

With 1:02 left in the third quarter, Riley engineered a 12-play, 80-yard drive culminating on a 22-yard TD run by himself to make it 13-12. Senior running back Keith Collings tried to punch the two-point PAT in but was stopped short.

The B-R defense stepped it up in the fourth quarter and caused two key turnovers (interceptions) that ended the Red Raiders' hopes of staying in the OCL title hunt.

The Raiders head to Marshfield this weekend, followed by a week off and then Falmouth on Thanksgiving Day at W. Leo Shields Memorial Field.
