Barnstable
Picks Up Big Win Versus Eagles
All it took to get things rolling at a blustery W. Leo Shields
Memorial Field Friday night was a perfect, 23-yard strike from
Junior Quarterback Kevin Riley to tight end Mike Noonan.
Engaged in a first quarter, defense-oriented
see-saw with the visiting Plymouth North Eagles of the Atlantic
Coast League, the Barnstable Red Raiders went finally went to
the air in the second quarter and hit paydirt when Riley found
his tight end wide open at the goal line and hit him square
in the numbers. Riley would end the game 6-6 for 74 yards passing.
The PAT kick failed, but Barnstable had the
early lead, 6-0. From that point, things steamrolled for the
Red Raiders, offensively.
Following its kick off, Barnstable took over
at midfield when a Plymouth North drive went for naught and
was forced to punt. The Eagles' punter shanked the ball to the
right side of the field and out of bounds, leaving Barnstable
in prime position at its own 49-yard line.
Five plays into its second possession
of the second quarter, tailback Bobby Nunes broke found a seam
and bolted into the end zone 29 yards. Nunes rang up 80 yards
rushing in the first half and finished the evening with 99 total.
The ensuing Red Raider kickoff was fumbled
and Barnstable recovered deep in Eagles' territory. Riley went
to work quickly, finding Nunes for a gain of 19, but the lanky
speedster could not get into the end zone and was forced out
of bounds at the one-yard-line. Riley picked up his first-ever
career touchdown when he went up he gut to make it 12-0. He
followed suit with the two-point PAT and the Red Raiders were
up, 20-0.
Plymouth North staged a short-lived comeback
in the second half, notching nine points on a touchdown, extra-point
kick and safety when Riley was forced out of the end zone.
